10 Ways to Prep Your Home for Sale

Most of you are aware that preparing your home to sell is what will essentially sell your home quicker than the next house on the market. It goes without saying, in this market there are no corners that can be spared at any cost. To get your home ready so it does not slip through the market cracks, here are 10 tips to get it in pristine buying condition.

Improve your landscaping
The outside of your home will obviously make a first impression on your potential buyer. Therefore, the landscaping is especially crucial. To make sure it is in ‘tip-top shape,’ mow the lawn, prune the bushes, and add some colour with fresh planted flowers.

Clean the outside
Again, the outward appearance of your home is important because a messy exterior will throw buyers off and they’ll think you also slacked off on interior maintenance (before they even walk through the front doors). So, be sure to check the gutters and the side of your home, a pressure wash here should do the trick.

Make repairs
Making repairs will definitely pay off in the long-run. Taking care of major defects like shingles falling off of your rooftop or broken windows will only further encourage buyers instead of discourage them.

Make the front door inviting
There is nothing like a fresh coat of paint on a front door – especially a bright or bold colour that contrasts with your home. A pop of colour on your door will help it stand out. Faded house numbers are also important to take note of and to replace.

Buy a new welcome mat
A welcome mat is like a warm invitation into your home.

Remove clutter and depersonalize
You want your buyers to envision themselves living in your home, so remove the clutter and your personal home touches. If you’re out of storage space within your home, a good option is to rent a storage unit for all of your personal items, extra furniture, photos, and kitsch.

Organize closets and drawers
You want to make sure your closets and drawers appear to they have as much space as possible.

Make every surface shine
This one is pretty self-explanatory, but make sure to get even the toughest surfaces like high ceiling fans.

Take colour down a notch
Bright, bold, colourful walls may put off your buyers. It’s best to go with neutral walls that will appear to a wide range of people.

Eliminate bad odors
When showing your home, you may consider filling it with inviting scents like fresh flowers and a fresh batch of cookies!
